Understanding Hookworm Therapy

Patient letter: rheumatoid arthritis and hookworm therapy. After being diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions ( Hashimoto's 2015 and recently, RA) I turned to traditional Western medicine doctors but found they were only interested in pushing medication on me and not at all concerned with how I could even try to feel better. Being a patient as well as an RN, I have seen both sides of the medical field. I trusted that traditional medical doctors could help me heal, but I was wrong. I needed something more than just pills. After consulting with Dr. Nenninger, he made me feel there were other options which had to do with healing me as a whole person in a more natural, non-pharmacological way. After months of gently and patiently informing me how Helminth Therapy could help, and feeling the disease was progressing quicker than I expected, I decided to try. The minute after I placed the hookworms on my foot I felt a little tingling, and then, believe it or not, pain felt like it was lifted away, I couldn’t believe it! That great feeling stayed with me most days, with some days having symptoms return, but not at all as bad as they originally were. The autoimmune fog and fatigue were a memory. In the three months of my treatment, I have been able to get back to the gym to lift weights and get back to yoga and Pilates. I am even able to get to the gym before my 10 hour shift at work! My husband is so excited he has his old wife back. I still cannot believe my energy and what I am able to accomplish each day, pain free, it is truly wonderful! When I talk to people about my treatment, they cringe and say they would never do it; but the ones who are suffering with autoimmune disease stop and think about not being in pain any longer and actually consider trying Hookworm/Helminth Therapy. I agree, it is creepy. But when you consider how the pros outweigh the cons, it’s really a no-brainer! Dr. Nenninger has been a life-saver. He delivers compassionate care and whenever I have a question he quickly responds. He wants me to keep him informed on how I’m feeling. He also helps me with my hormones, keeping me feeling as best as I possibly can. When has a traditional doctor ever done that? They don’t! I recommend Dr. Nenninger to everyone I know. You will not find a better doctor to treat you as you Should be treated! Thank you Dr. Nenninger! Patient Letter: Lyme disease and hookworm therapy. My journey towards hookworms started when I discovered a rash under my right armpit in June 2014. I felt like I had the flu. Fast forward, a couple of months later, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. I had all the typical symptoms of joint pain, fat knees, unexplained muscle aches. By the way, I took antibiotics and herbs to deal with Lyme symptoms, plus I’m gluten free and follow my blood type diet religiously. The most disturbing symptom that I developed was middle of the night allergies, I would wake up to severe nasal discharge with eye itching. This is called mast cell activation due to the Lyme disease spirochete coming in contact with mast cells and creating allergy type symptoms. This was the worst part of Lyme disease for me. And to top it off, I must have also been bitten by a lone star tick, I had a red meat allergy. So I couldn’t eat beef or lamb. After one and a half years of suffering, I finally agreed to hookworms. Within one week of having hookworms, my symptoms started to subside. After one month, I was symptom free. It was like a miracle. I will forever be grateful to the treatment of hookworms and to Steve Nenninger for thinking outside the box. And I can eat red meat again!! With Gratitude, Roseanne Patient Letter: Crohn's disease and hookworms. I’ve never written a testimonial before, but I never thought I would need to, I thought that I would slowly die as there was no cure for Crohn’s, only treatments that traded one symptom for another.   I was diagnosed when I was 15 and tried all the different medicine available at the time but nothing worked for very long and even when something did work the results were disappointing.   Over the years I developed chronic inflammation, sever muscle fatigue, depression and all the typical stomach problems and pains.  I had heard about helminth therapy many years ago, but it sounded too good to be true and impossible to get.   When I heard that there was a Doctor in my area that had them I knew I was going to get them and I was optimistic for the first time in my life.  I heard about a few people who had amazing results and wanted to be one of them.   I met with Dr. Nenninger and he explained the science to me, it all made perfect sense.  Within a few months my body underwent a dramatic change.  My stomach problems went away for the first time in 25 years.   I lost weight at a healthy pace and felt strong enough to start going to gym.  Today I feel healthier than at any point in my entire life.  The process of administering the hookworms is not just painless but exciting, I felt no symptoms other than bursts of energy, very fast recovery from injuries and a clear mind.  I take no medication; the worms do their job of keeping my whole body in balance and I’m free to finally go about living my life to the fullest.  I know exactly where I would be without them and I’m grateful for every moment thanks to Dr. Nenninger. Patient Letter: Crohn's disease in Children Dear Dr. Nenninger ~ I'm writing to let you know how well Matt is doing, and what a profound effect your care, and the special medicine you prescribed, has had on his life. Matt feels great, and for the first time in ten years, since his diagnosis of Crohn's Disease at the age of eight, he has freedom of diet, which essentially gives him freedom in life. He recently started his freshman year in college, away from home, and is having the time of his life! He is living a "normal" life, eating "normal" foods, something we had no expectation of not that long ago. Because he is and has been well for months now, he is able to engage in every way - socially, academically, athletically, feeling healthy and so happy! We are all elated at his newfound wellness, freedom, and joy in life. Not a day passes by that we are not aware of how far we have come. We take nothing for granted. I am so thankful to you for always being there for Matt when he needs you, and for never giving up. Through the seven years that we have known you, you have endlessly researched and sought answers and treatments to the difficult medical problems that we have presented. And it has so paid off for Matt! Words cannot adequately express how grateful we are. ~With Love, Sarah
August 9th, 2018 Patient Letter: Gout Dear Dr. Nenninger, I just wanted to reach out and share how well I have been doing on your special medicine you prescribed for me! I have been suffering from Gout and acute gout attacks for the past 15 years. My primary care physician was quick to recommend a hematologist that prescribed some pharmaceutical medications that really hurt my kidneys. When I came off that medication (as I didn’t want to be on it the rest of my life) I was having gout attacks more frequent than ever! My Wife recommended I see Dr. Nenninger to treat these very painful symptoms, in a matter of 8 weeks, I am joint pain and gout free. I can’t thank you enough for all your help! A.D. Patient Letter: Eczema In a world of tangled advice and good intentions Dr Nenninger has steered a clear path for our family. We came to him at the climax of a mountain that we had traversed with our second son, Jack. He had battled with eczema since about 10 months old during which we followed our pediatrician’s advice and applied steroid cream, but this only resulted in it going away until the cream was stopped and then it returning with a vengeance. As Jack grew we also noticed that he was not speaking much, with barely 5 -10 ‘kinda’ words at 18 months. We chalked this up to being a boy and kept an eye on things. Then he was having more noticeable behavioral symptoms, 2 year old temper tantrums, which unexplainably felt different to me. I was not able to articulate why they felt different, even from his older sisters or from the countless other children that I have encountered during my careers as an early childhood teacher and a full time nanny to twin boys. I was not able to explain to my family why I thought Jack needed to be ridden out during these times and not ridden harder. He was crying out for help, eventually actually saying “help me!” while upset. By the time he was 3 these “flip outs” were happening sometimes every 3 hours or so and stopping within about 20 minutes no matter what I did. I would sit next to him and hold him while he screamed “hold me, hold me!” and ride it out like I was surfing a wave, and just as odd as it would start it would stop. His eczema was still present, as were his language delays and fine motor delays and lack of eye contact and disinterest in social interaction with others besides our core family. We had been seeing a chiropractor for him since birth, belonged to a CSA, raised our own chickens for their eggs and drove to Pennsylvania every year for a beef share, we had also started to try applied kinesiology with a very kind chiropractor. So at his 3rd birthday his eczema spots, mainly on his legs, were the size of a silver dollar. While trying to supplement and reduce sugar over that fall I gave him lots of scrambled eggs (from our chickens) and organic bananas and sprouted breads, etc. There was no improvement. After Christmas Jack came down with the Flu. It was while sitting in the ER with him explaining to the doctors that we are not here for “burns” on his legs, but rather that he had the flu and now he is unable to walk that I got the text from Abby that we could be seen the next day, a Sunday no less. At this point the eczema took over most of his shins and itched him so badly that he always had dried blood under his nails from scratching. He was also waking every night and screaming inconsolably for an hour or so at a time. He would lie on the floor at the foot of our bed and flip around so much it looked like a dolphin playing in the water. This is how we came to refer to his night time antics as “going full dolphin”. When I met Dr. Nenninger I didn’t feel like I had to be on guard, I felt like I had someone else on my team trying to figure this out. He understood the path that I was on…constantly second guessing everything I gave Jack to eat, trying to keep him safe. He didn’t just throw a diagnosis at me, but rather offered possibilities and a hand to walk with through this mountain. I appreciate that he looked at my son and could see past the behavior and raw skin to see a sensitive, loving, kind boy that was taxed and hurting. He worked with us to have Jack’s Igg and Iga tests done and the many subsequent visits to check in. Jack has been the 10th patient, most people react one way; Jack seems to need us to go the extra step, every time. Dr. Nenninger has not gotten tired of seeing us or these past 2 ½ years and has entertained my questions, concerns and requests to write things down on the bottle so I remember them. Jack turned 6 this month, he is eczema free, holds a pencil and writes his name, speaks clearly and to others, speaks in front of a class, and he also doesn’t “go full dolphin” anymore. He is helpful and funny; he plays with his baby brothers and takes pride in protecting them (mostly from each other). Besides Jack’s journey myself, my husband and four other children have benefited. Because we were able to see the pattern emerging his younger brothers have not gotten to the same place Jack was, we were able to mitigate their symptoms almost entirely. My family is so blessed to have Dr. Nenninger in our lives to help guide us through these sometimes muddled paths. Patient Letter: Muscle Injury I’ve been playing tennis since age 5 (I’m 37 now), and I was a top nationally ranked junior player before playing professionally (top 100 level) and also being a NCAA Division 1 student athlete. I currently still compete but I am also a professional coach and most recently I was one of the main hitting partners for the US Open.  I’ve know Dr Steve since 2009 and due to all his help I’ve been able to stay healthy and maintain a high level both physically and mentally. In September 2017, I’ve had a groin injury while playing. I tried resting it, strength program and everything else possible and it never quite got back to 100%. Dr Steve suggested that I should try the worms and I kept postponing it. Fast forward to end of July 2018. After playing a tournament, I pulled my right quad. I panicked because I was 4 weeks away from going to the US Open so I finally decided to get the worms. I’m mad at myself for not doing it earlier. Life changing experience. By the end of the second week after getting the worms my quad was fully recovered and my lingering groin issue completely healed. I also started sleeping better and I had the same energy level as when I was in my mid 20s. I started eating better, no stress, very positive. It is an ongoing process but getting the worms was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. C.A. Why I started using hookworms. I want you to know about hookworms because they can make a giant  improvement in your health if you have autoimmune disease or inflammation.  Let me tell you a little bit about how I discovered and started using hookworms.  I did not start using them because I was looking for something new to do in practice. I found hookworm therapy in a desperate search to help my son. My son's illness takes me on a hookworm journey, When my son got sick, I was at that point 20 years into practice in naturopathic, alternative, holistic natural medicine.  I was very experienced in all natural and conventional approaches to illness including homeopathy, herbs and nutrition.  These tools had worked very well with the vast majority of thousands of my patients.  Both my patients and I were very happy. My practice was filled by personal referrals from people that had gotten well. Most of these were patients that had tried and failed conventional modern medicine and they were grateful that a different approach had worked for them. So most of the cases were puzzles that needed to be solved. I loved looking at cases in this way and given the rate the people got better I was good at it. Then a few years ago my son got mono in 11th grade.  Unlike recovering like most other kids do, he got a condition called fulminant mono.  Instead of the usual few weeks of fatigue, fulminant mono can lead to organ failure and death.  When I received his blood test results I was shocked. His inflammation markers were very elevated (CRP above 50) and his liver enzymes and pancreatic enzymes were elevated. He was in pain and felt terrible. Worse for me was that none of my natural medicine tools worked to cure the case, or even improve his symptoms. In fact everything I did seemed to make him worse, frustratingly. I am not close minded and went to the medical doctors, but conventional medicine had nothing to offer for this condition either.  My son became very sick, and his body did not appear to be able to figure out how to get better. The one thing his body knew for sure was to go into nonstop, relentless full attack mode. I had spent years getting good at solving health problems and now I couldn't solve this one. Or I should say that I could not solve his case without a different understand of health and healing. So stripped of any preconceptions, with my ego in ashes, I began my journey to help him. My wonderful son. If you don't have autoimmune disease in your own family you may not relate to this. But for those of us that are autoimmune, or that have loved ones that develop an autoimmune condition, it is life changing in ways that you can not imagine. It is like your child wakes up one day and their arms and legs have switched places. Nothing is like it was, nothing works like it is supposed to, and no one really understands how your life has changed. I needed to figure out how to help my son when all the tools I developed over two decades did not work. I needed to understand what autoimmunity really was. Doctors talk about this all the time without really understanding it. And then I needed to figure out why the mono virus had triggered this in him. Most of all I needed to figure out what to do about it. A new understanding of autoimmune disease. For some of us who have a normal set point in the yellow zone, at one point we are relatively normal and then a bacteria, virus, emotional, or physical stress activates our immune system. The causes the immune to stay stuck in the on position and attack everything-including our own body. Raising my son, we did everything right from a natural medicine standpoint. He wasn’t vaccinated because a vaccine in the marine corps is what triggered my own autoimmune disease.  He didn’t eat any GMO or processed foods.  His diet was largely organic and whole food.  He avoided his food allergens and ate the best diet for his blood type.  We were well rewarded for our efforts because our son was a beautiful, smart, personable, healthy, and an athletic 16 year old. Simply put my son was a complete pleasure, and really gave me no stress of any kind.  We had worked hard with our natural medicine knowledge to protect him from inflammatory influences his whole life. That system was now turning against itself. I thought that I had done everything right for my son to be healthy based on years of medical school and experience working with children’s health. Regardless of all of this my son's body was on a self destructive course.  The mono virus had turned his immune system on full power and there was no way to shut it down. Autoimmune conditions are not new to my family, we all have had autoimmune diseases. But our autoimmune disease were more chronic and they were always managed well with natural medicines techniques that I had learned throughout the years. However managing a case is different than curing a case. Bailing out the boat is different than fixing the leak. I had been basically become an expert in managing disease with natural medicine. But now I had a case that was not going to just respond to management. There was no way to bail this boat out fast enough, and it was sinking. We needed to fix the holes if my son was going to get better. Now I needed to know more about why we have autoimmune disease and especially how to fix them, now more than ever before in my life. My son had an acute type of autoimmune disease, not the chronic type of autoimmune diseases like my siblings and I. In my family autoimmunity such as crohn's disease, colitis, multiple sclerosis, hashimoto's thyroiditis, and diabetes existed. My Research Begins So I began to do a little research for my son (just a little). I studied and read everything about autoimmune disease that I could find, up to twelve hours per day for months. This was after treating autoimmune disease for twenty years. Finally I came across an article that discussed the contents of ancient poo. The article mentioned that the highest concentration of parasites were found in the camp sites of ancient Viking tribes. Especially high was the concentration of hookworms which was double what they had found in other parts of the world. But I was confused. Don't parasites make you sick? And yet we all have an image in our minds eye of the powerful Vikings. I have a Viking ancestry that goes back to an ancient king of Norway. So this was very interesting to me. How could the Vikings have been healthy and have these dangerous parasites. So vigorous and healthy Vikings were burdened with health destroying parasites? Did this make any sense? Me and my son had these genes in our body also. This whole situation did not make sense in the same way my son's destructive autoimmune disease did not make sense. The article talked about how Viking stool (poo) had the highest concentration of hookworms eggs that they had found in any people they had studied, but how could this be?  Vikings were described by both Persian and Roman historians to be the most beautiful, vigorous, and hearty people of the time. All while these parasites were sucking the life out of them? Things didn't make sense and I had seen this before in medicine before where assumptions don't match reality. That usually means there is some deeper level of understanding available. How could these worm infected Vikings be so healthy that they were feared throughout the world?  Aren't hookworms considered parasites? And aren’t parasites bad for you? I began to wonder. Me and my siblings and now my son were basically autoimmune Vikings. Then in my random searches I read how hookworms had been studied in animals and shown potential for preventing organ transplant rejection. The would give a mouse a skin graft and if it had mouse hookworms it would not reject the graft. Isn't the process of autoimmune disease like rejecting a transplanted organ? And wait a minute... how and why is a parasite doing this? Why does having a dangerous parasite allow you to accept a tissue transplant? Healthy Vikings with Worms? A Persian writer a thousand years ago wrote about how disgusting the Vikings were in their behavior.  They would basically share a big bowl of water and bathe, blow their nose, drink, etc., all from the same bowl. This Persian sense of disgust was simply their body’s way of telling them that the Persians would get sick with similar behavior. The Vikings had no such fear because of their very strong immune systems.  This was the same immune system that allowed them to go around the world as invaders and traders. Interestingly the ancient writer would also write about how beautiful, tall, healthy and vigorous the Viking people were. Were these the same people with all of those hookworm eggs in their poo? How was that possible? Strongest People Ever Are Now Sick? Most Anglo people around the world share genes with this small group of amazing Vikings. The vast majority of people with autoimmune disease share these genes.  We also share the highly aggressive immune systems that allowed them to be successful in going throughout the world. It is also interesting that a tremendous amount of the technological and scientific advances in our society are by people with these same genes. Why are Vikings sick today?  They ate food, we eat food.  They had bacteria, we have bacteria.  They had worms, but we don’t have worms!  Was the highly inflammatory and autoimmunity state that anglo people find themselves in today due to the fact that the Vikings had hookworms and we do not? None of the natural or conventional medicines had worked for my son. So I found some hookworms and took some. Those of you that are parents know that at that point I had nothing to loose in my eyes. What did I care what happened to me at that point. My son was very sick and not getting better. The years of expertise in natural medicine that I had from helping thousands of people was not working for me. His immune system was a Ferrari going at 150 miles per hour down the highway without brakes. My Self Experimentation My hookworms came, I put them on a bandaid, and applied them to my skin.  My reaction was immediate and intense. Any feeling of stress that I felt went away- completely. Obviously, I was stressed from my son being sick, but I also had other normals stresses; and they all went away too.  I could look at the same situation, and I could not feel stressed about it. Then a bit later something really strange happened. I was washing my dishes an hour or so later, with the window open in front of me.  I heard a sound like a helicopter come over the house.  I looked out and it was a blue bird taking off and flying away. The hookworms had somehow given me a brief period of super hearing...Strange...I know. I honestly don't know what to make of it, but it was my first day without inflammation in 30 years. I would sometimes struggle to get to sleep before midnight. The night I took the hookworms I could not stay awake and fell fast asleep early in the evening. Then at sunrise I awoke with a burst of energy. I was wide awake and went for a run, and then went to the gym. My improvements with hookworms Previously I had stopped enjoying the gym for the last few years because I would get so stiff and inflammatory after a workout.  In the past I had decreased my workouts, only going twice per week. But in the afternoon after my hookworm dose, I felt like going to the gym again that same afternoon. That was twice in one day. Since my first dose of worms a few years ago I consistently want, need and love going to the gym twice per day. Oh and in the three years I have been on worms I have put on about 25 pounds of muscle. I give my son hookworms Perfecting the best and most effective way to use hookworms took a lot of attention, but once I was satisfied with my own experiment, I gave hookworms to my son. The next time I next tested him in the lab for his inflammation level, his CRP (a lab test for inflammation) had gone from extremely elevated to normal.  His health has continued to improve since that day. Hookworms are the only medicine of all my natural, homeopathic, herbal, nutritional, or conventional drugs like prednisone that was able to lower his inflammation levels. Since all of my siblings have autoimmune disease, they eventually began hookworms as well. When my sister had an aggravation of her multiple sclerosis I gave her hookworms and her symptoms completely resolved. Keep in mind she had been treated with other natural medicines to keep her symptom free for years, and the hookworms still made a difference. Hookworms have multiple effects Hookworms seem to have multiple effects on the Anglo body. One aspect of hookworms is that they release a chemical similar to prednisone, however, they release only and exactly the amount that you need to the molecule. You and the worms have a goal in common, and that is to keep your inflammation low. Every mammal has a hookworm population, every primate has a hookworm population, and until a few generations ago every human. InflammationšŸ”„ vs. RehabilitationšŸ’¦ The body has two main ways of being that it can choose from. The body can choose an inflammatory state, and inflammation means fire. This state of the body is fight or flight. In this state the body is struggling to be victorious in a perceived battle between a bug and the immune system. Since the consequences of loosing the battle or perceived battle are life and death for the body it is very aggressive and causes a lot of tissue destruction. At least over estimating the threat only caused damage. Underestimating a bacteria threat caused death. The body is so concerned about loosing that it is willing to destroy its own tissue rather than let one of the bugs live. Once it wins against the bug the body can go to the rehabilitation stage and start building a new home. However, if the body never get the signal to stop fighting because it does not have the anti-inflammatory signal amplification that the hookworms provide. So we never get to the rehabilitation stage. We never start to rebuild our body house. We can never build the new house if we keep burning down the old one. When the body gets the "stop fighting"šŸ›‘ signal from the hookworms it is the most clear and powerful voice that the immune system has ever heard. People always ask if one thing or another that is bothering them will get better. What I say to them is what I actually know for sure. And what I know is that without the constant anti-inflammatory signals from the hookworms you will never get better. As far as if things will get better only time will tell. But the best thing you can do it to put yourself in the position to make that happen. Killing hookworms causes autoimmunity In the last few generations humans, as a group,  have done their own experiment. What happens to the highly aggressive immune system of humans when you take their hookworms away? The results of this experiment are pretty dramatic and clear cut, and the answer is that there is an epidemic of autoimmune disease and cancer that is getting worse, not better. We can see that conditions of accelerated immunity in conditions like Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema that have been directly linked to a Viking gene that regulated the amount of worms in the lungs. So people received this pro-inflammatory lung gene without having the strong anti-inflammatory support that a current hookworm population would give. That allows lung inflammation to race out of control. Hookworms are applied to the skin and find their way to the intestine. In the intestine, they grow to about half an inch long and are as wide as a few hairs. They live in one small section of the small intestine only and nowhere else in the body. They can live as long as a person lives. It is important to remember that hookworms are only successful in their life if you are successful in yours. It is to the worms advantage if you are as healthy as possible. In nature, human-beings get their hookworms around six months old. These children are born to mothers with hookworms. Studies and a simple look at where autoimmune disease exists show us that children born to mothers with hookworms do not develop autoimmune diseases and allergies. Even if we eliminate all of the immune system stimulants that we can that does not solve the Viking immune case. Eventually the Viking immune system finds something new to attack. Ancient Description of the Vikings A Persian historian wrote about the Vikings in the first century. I have seen the Rus (Vikings) as they came on their merchant journeys and encamped by the Volga. I have never seen more perfect physical specimens, tall as date palms, blonde and ruddy; they wear neither tunics nor caftans, but the men wear a garment which covers one side of the body and leaves a hand free. They are the filthiest of God's creatures. They have no modesty in defecation and urination, nor do they wash their hands after eating. Thus they are like wild asses. Every day they must wash their faces and heads and this they do in the dirtiest and filthiest fashion possible: to wit, every morning a girl servant brings a great basin of water; she offers this to her master and he washes his hands and face and his hair -- he washes it and combs it out with a comb in the water; then he blows his nose and spits into the basin. When he has finished, the servant carries the basin to the next person, who does likewise. She carries the basin thus to all the household in turn, and each blows his nose, spits, and washes his face and hair in it. A Roman Historian about the Vikings For my own part, I agree with those who think that the tribes of (Northern Europe) are free from all taint of intermarriages with foreign nations, and that they appear as a distinct, unmixed race, like none but themselves. Hence, too, the same physical peculiarities throughout so vast a population. All have fierce blue eyes, red hair, huge frames, fit only for a sudden exertion. They are less able to bear laborious work. Heat and thirst they cannot in the least endure; to cold and hunger their climate and their soil inure them. A summary of the history. The Vikings were dirty and disgusting. Not concerned in the least with disease, infection and cleanliness. And ye they were not sick and disease. They were admired from Rome to Persia for their beauty and strength. We are the ancestors of these people with highly aggressive immune system that allowed them to live fearlessly in terms of cleanliness. What they had that we don't is the immunoregulation provided by having a population of hookworms. Instead of health and vigor today's Vikings have inflammation and autoimmune disease. Your immune system is not broken. Your immune system has been refined over millennia. What is broken is the environment that your immune system finds itself in. If we take a fish out of the water and put it on dry land and it can't breathe, do we say there is something wrong with the fish? Your immune system is the fish on dry land. IF you restore the right eco-system you will restore the correct function. Humans Have Worms In and examination of ancient human settlements worms are always found in stool. In Africa, they consistently find at least nine worms. In Asia they always find twelve worms. In North America they always find at least twelve worms. In Europe, they consistently find eighteen worms. If you look throughout every continent in digestive samples going back 9,000 years you find that human beings had worms as a normal part of their intestinal ecosystem. This includes the nobles of the time and ancient Egyptian mummies. So the worms found in stool are not the random sample of a sick person, but a normal inhabitant of the intestines, even in the best cared for members of society. Worms are also consistently found in Neanderthal sites as well as every other primate, in fact all mammals in general. A Summary of the History From the ancient descriptions of the Viking people we can see that the Viking's were very dirty and disgusting to foreign peoples. And yet these people were strong and beautiful. They were not sick and diseased. The arrangement that allowed them to be so successful was a highly aggressive immune system that allowed them to not worry about bacteria and disease. And this super strong immune system was balanced by the immune system regulation provided by the hookworms in their system. We took hookworms out of Vikings, and this has allowed the immune system to race out of control. The Australian Hookworm Study Recently, a study was done in Australia where 12 patients with a gluten allergy were given hookworms to cure their autoimmune disease.  All were cured in a year of their celiac disease and given the options to kill off their hookworms. At the end of the study, none of the study subjects allowed their hookworms to be killed off; they all opted to keep hookworms. They felt so much freedom from being able to eat a food that previously gave them severe reactions. For all we know some, most or maybe all people require hookworms to properly digest grains. We know for sure that at least those people diagnosed with celiac disease do. Hookworms have the ability to change and control many of the immune system and hormonal system regulating compounds. They're a lot of these immunomodulatory chemicals listed in the references at the end of the booklet. The most important thing to know is that hookworms can release a chemical that looks exactly like the anti-inflammatory hormone prednisone. The difference is that the hookworms release the chemicals molecule by molecule. One at a time, unlike drugs. They give you just the inflammation control that you need without the side effects of drugs. An additional action of hookworm is the organize the bacteria in the intestines. If they see a bacteria they don't like in the intestine then they will cause the immune system to eliminate that bacteria. If they see a bacteria they like then they will encourage the growth of that bacteria. By organizing the bacteria hookworms take unnecessary stress off of the immune system. Because of this the immune system gets a new stability and stops over reacting to every stimulant. We used to think that there were parts of the body that were sterile and had now bacteria. Now we realize that bacteria are everywhere in the body. Which makes sense since bacteria can live in volcanic vents and deep ocean trenches. So when a woman has unexplained interstitial cystitis and has to pee all of the time it is because this bacteria is irritating her bladder. Pregnancy and Hookworms When pregnant and breastfeeding moms have hookworms, it prevents allergies in their children. Not having a hookworm causes an increase in infections. (mpairwe) In native cultures, children are known to have a hookworm by 6 months of age. (Brooker 1999) Having a hookworm prevents excessive reactions to common infections in childhood, such as mononucleosis. When children are less allergic, they are also less likely to experience mouth breathing, which leads to better palate formation from tongue pressure. When the tongue exerts proper pressure, the palate widens, allowing accommodation of teeth, and less need for braces. Avoiding braces prevents nerve root trauma and tooth loss. Eosinophils and Cancer Eosinophils are the white blood cells that are elevated by worms. Eosinophils cause cancer rejection by normalizing vessels and enhancing the infiltration of immune cells. ( Carretero 2015) Eosinophils infiltrate tumors and are one of the body’s first lines of cancer defense. (Cormier) Activated eosinophils are essential for tumor rejection. Tumor activated eosinophils (TATE) are an independent factor for good cancer prognosis. Inverse association between eosinophil count and cancer, more eosinophils equals less cancer risk. (PMC3175810) Eosinophils induced by both chemotherapy and cancer vaccines. Can hookworms support conventional cancer approaches? Highest rates of cancer are in dewormed Nordic people. Alzheimer's and Dementia Also when people get inflammatory scar tissue on their brain called amyloid plaques that is also an inflammatory reaction to the body aggressively attacking the normal bacteria in the brain. This attack leads to symptoms that we call Altzheimers or dementia and other brain diseases. Autism and Developmental Delay Obviously the causes of autism are a very controversial subject. What we can at a minimum say the the inflammatory state of autoimmune disease should be moderated by Hookworms. Actually it was a patient with autism years ago that actually started me thinking about the counter inflammatory affect of worms. The father of the boy came into me one visit and said that he had taken his son on a walk through the woods. Both of the had come back with a ton a chiggers. Chiggers are a flea like animals that burrows under the skin and is extremely itchy. The boy came back with chiggers up and down his legs. When they woke up the morning after the hike the man was shocked that his son was very functional and that his autism symptoms had greatly diminished. These symptoms gradually reappeared as the chiggers resolved. The man came in convinced that this temporary infection had alleviated his son's symptoms. He told me that story ten years ago and I never forgot it, but never had a therapy that I could apply to the situation until I discovered hookworms and helminthic therapy. Increasing the protective gel of the guts. How do the hookworms work to cure inflammation? One mechanical effect the worms have is that they increase the protective mucus layer of the intestine. This extra protective layer prevents food proteins from activating the immune system. This prevents the foods from creating antibodies which is another way of saying that it cures food allergens. The immune system has the default setting that say that if in doubt about whether a protein is a friend or a foe than knock it out. Just curing food allergens alone would be enough to take tremendous stress off the immune system. But this is just one small part of what worms do. I cured many cases with the elimination of food allergens, but there are a few downsides to that approach. When we avoid a food, we tell our body that this food is rare and therefore we should binge and eat a lot of it when it is available. If blueberries only come out for a week, then it makes sense to consume as much as possible. We put people in a craving state when we make them eliminate their food. Another problem with elimination diets is that it creates a feeling a separateness from others. Eating at a special lunch table, or not participating completely in holiday meals can create a feeling of isolation.  Remember, one of the ways that various groups of people separate themselves is by dietary restrictions. The last and important point about food allergies is that restricting a food group may create a nutritional deficiency. Of course, if the only option was eating your food allergen or having symptoms, then you need to stop the food allergen. Hookworms give us the option of keeping all of the foods, but changing the bodies reactions to the foods. One of the ways the body does this is by raising the mucus level in the intestine.  Just like a high tide keeps the boats from hitting the rocks, increasing the mucus level in the intestine stops the allergic food protein from triggering the immune system. Rather than being a parasite hookworms are more like a symbiotic organism. Where a parasite takes from you a symbiotic organism works with you for the mutual benefit of both organisms. Every mammal has a hookworm population, every primate has a hookworm populations, and every human-being, up to a few generations ago, had a hookworm populations. Under inflammatory states hookworms release a chemical that works exactly like prednisone. However, unlike the massive doses of drugs that create side effects, hookworms release anti-inflammatory chemicals molecule by molecule. The worms rely on you to be healthy so they can make their eggs. If you are not well, are sick, or are dead those worms are gone from the face of the earth. Getting the Right Worms? As long as you get the right worms then you are dealing with a species who’s sole purpose in life is to make you healthy and happy. This is why it is so important to know exactly what worms you are getting. All hookworms look the same under the microscope, but there are two major species.  We call them the bad one the wolf worm (ancylostoma duodenale) and the good one the dog worm (necator americanus). Just like wolves and dogs, they might look the same as puppies, but the behavior they show when they grow up is very different. When you look at letters and pictures on the old interwebs about hookworms; you are seeing wolf worm reactions. It doesn’t make sense to use a worm that you do not know what it is or where it came from. I will never understand why people will use worms that do not have a DNA linage analysis.  And even if you know you are getting the dog worm, it is important to know whether you are getting pitbulls or poodles. Just like getting a pet for your home, you want the breed that is most compatible with humans and domesticated to behave well and benefit your system, and not turn around to bite you. When you do your research, just remember that most aggravations are from people who do not correctly identify the worms they are working with, and therefore end up using the wrong worms. It is very interesting to see how each person reacts to a dose of worms. It is almost as if each person’s case is like the layers of cake. In some cases, people will feel an emotional change first. Most commonly what is described is the elimination of anxiety, but there are a fair number of cases that come in and talk about how their physical healing was accelerated. The Elimination of Anxiety One common reaction reaction to the hookworms is a decrease of anxiety. If is more than the just the sensation that someone would get if they took a sedative. For some people it is the complete elimination of any sensation of anxiety and a complete sense of calm for the first time in their life. I experienced this myself. Over the years I had been getting more and more inflammatory and that had made my anxiety increase. It had gotten to the point where if I received a letter that was even addressed in a way that looked like it would be work or paperwork then could trigger stress for days. After I took the worms I felt a profound sense of calm. It was not as if I did not recognize the challenges in my life, it was just that I could not generate a sense of anxiety about the situations. It was a sense of calm I had not experienced since child. I later learned that this anxiety was caused by chemicals in the body called cytokines. Cytokines are the inflammation signals that your body uses to activate the immune system. There are some drugs that decrease cytokines but the only thing that dose it without dangerous side effects that we know scientifically is hookworm therapy. It is so important to control anxiety because anxiety turns off your brain. When you have a feeling of anxiety that is a part of the brain called the amygdala being activated. The amygdala is a left over part of our brain from the dinosaur age. When that part is activated we become the little animal whose best strategy for survival was to freeze. If there is no immediate danger you should never have the experience of anxiety. A little anxiety is exactly like having a little knee pain. There is no level that is normal. The body triggers the experience of anxiety by producing cortisol and adrenaline. The signal to produce these hormones comes from the pituitary gland. Hookworms directly stop the production of adrenaline and cortisol since these can be considered immune signals. If you think about adrenaline it rises when there is some kind of risk. In the past this risk would not have been about the daily things that cause anxiety today. In the past adrenaline was associated with an increase in the risk of physical injury. This is the connection between stress anxiety an autoimmune disease One of the most common experiences with hookworm therapy, some times immediately is a decrease of anxiety. I can tell you for my my anxiety levels when from a level eight out of ten to a zero. Injury One professional athlete patient had a strained and painful thigh muscle injury for six months when he finally decided to do the worms. A week after the worms, he told me he was completely healed. Even I noticed this reaction in myself. Prior to worms, when I was inflammatory, and injured myself in the gym, I knew I was in for six months of babying the injury. Not only do I not get those injuries any more, but if I do, then I know I just need a good night of sleep and I will be recovered. It is the strangest feeling, and I know it is probably something that needs to be experienced in order to be understood. Sometimes the idea of hookworms seems strange to people. Yet, these same people would not think twice if they needed a titanium rod to heal a fracture, or if they needed to take a probiotic after an antibiotic treatment. Hookworm populations are common in other mammal and primate species like monkeys and gorillas.  In fact, in primates the presence of hookworms allows for and facilitates a higher testosterone level; it is one of the ways that hookworms help us.  In humans, hookworms were common until a few generations ago. We have done several things in modern society that eliminate the chance of getting hookworms. The highest concentrations of hookworms are found in ancient Viking camp sites. These people had a powerful immune system but also a powerful organ for stopping the immune system. That powerful organ is called hookworms. Hookworms, when they are applied, are not even visible to the naked eye; they are microscopic. They go on a bandage that is applied to the foot or upper arm. I put it on my foot because I think it more naturally mimics how the hookworms are transmitted in nature. Specialty Hookworm Dosing In the many patients receiving worms we have seen many interesting responses to different dosing. One approach is to just give the standard dose of 20 worms and wait for a few months. Another approach is what we call drop dosing that we will sometimes use if a patient knows that she is very sensitive and will do better with the smost gentle approach. Drop dosing can be done with as little as one worm per week. This is low dosing is also called "Doni dosing". In this way every person no matter what their sensitivities are can benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of hookworms. We can look for more more subtle signs of reaction to the hookworms than just the itching that can take place on the foot. Some patients that may do the dose of one or two worms look for a sensation of phlegm about 24 hours after taking the worms. Dr. Doni talks about "Doni Dosing" Clutter.... I’ve had allergies for as long as I can remember. Allergies to pollen, dust, and certain foods. By changing my diet, avoiding dairy and gluten, healing leaky gut and optimizing cortisol, my allergies to pollen disappeared. Still, I was severely allergic to dust, so much so that cleaning the house for even 5 minutes would cause me to experience days of allergy symptoms…sneezing, congestion, and headaches. I avoided cleaning and would even need to leave the house when someone else was cleaning. I also avoided gluten 100% otherwise I would experience a migraine headache for at least 24 hours. I’m also sensitive to medications, chemicals, and perfumes. I am the first to react, even to herbs and nutrients. I’ve learned to start with low doses and take it slowly so as to avoid feeling worse. When I was ready to get a hookworm, I wanted to apply this same approach – start low. I started with one hookworm, when the standard dose is 20. This allowed me to notice every slight symptom and change that I experienced. I repeated the dose of one hookworm every week for four weeks. After six weeks from when I started, I checked my blood work, and it showed a significant increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cells), which is an expected change when a hookworm has established in the intestines. Then I increased the hookworm dose to 2 worms. And two weeks later, 5 worms. After each dose, I noticed a temporary tickling sensation on my foot where the hookworms had been applied. I did not notice a rash on my foot until after applying 5 worms. The small red rash lasted a couple hours and was accompanied by a mild itchy feeling on that foot. Within 24 to 48 hours, after each worm application, I noticed a mild swelling feeling in my throat, followed by increased phlegm, which lasted from 1 to 12 hours. 36 to 72 hours after applying the hookworms, I sometimes experienced loose stool for one bowel movement. Two months after the first hookworm application, I noticed that my dust allergy symptoms had decreased. I was able to clean the house with less of a reaction. At three months I was able to clean my house and basement without any reactions to dust. I did not have to take anything for allergies and was able to completely declutter without feeling worse. What a change! I was finally able to clean out my space without allergic symptoms. Three months after starting with hookworms, I tried a dose of gluten. I ate ¼ cup of gluten pasta. I did not experience any negative symptoms. No headache, no migraine, and no pain in general. I could not tell that I had eaten gluten. After avoiding gluten for over 15 years, this is unbelievable. Gatekeeper Action of Worms For years I have helped people manage their health by removing the hidden food allergens through IgG and IgA food allergy testing. This test counts the number of antibodies you make to a food. The only option that I had for patients at that time was to give up the foods that tested high. This would at least keep the antibodies in the blood from finding the food protein they were looking for. By stopping this beginning step we would stop the end step which was the inflammatory symptom. I knew there were steps in the middle between the antibody which was being created to catch the food protein and the eventual inflammatory symptoms, but I had no idea of how to control those middle steps and had never heard of them being controlled unless it was a drug like prednisone. In my reading I found that naive tribes with worms had a much higher amount of antibodies to various protein in their environment then average people. These people were not less allergic. They actually had more allergic antibodies but did not have the expected reactions. They produced more antibodies in their blood to proteins in the environment, but they had less inflammation and symptoms if any at all. It turns out that hookworms control the middle step of the inflammatory process. With hookworms you can make antibodies to the environment including foods without having the inflammatory effects at the end. Hookworms are the gate keeper to our inflammatory reactions. The hookworms are very smart about when to allow an inflammatory reaction and when to block it. The hookworms stop inflammatory reactions to foods. Babies and Hookworms & Pregnancy In nature, the hookworms are transmitted when poo (night soil) is used to fertilize crops. The hookworms mature in the soil and then when people walk in the soil to tend the crops, they get infected with hookworms. This cycle would continue for thousands of years. Babies would get worms by 6 months old so that they were resistant to allergies and inflammation early on in their life. Pregnant women would have worms and that would make sure that the baby was not allergic when it was born.   How do the worms get in? The worms, when they make contact with the skin, create a keratin tube that allows them to move through skin and into the circulation.  That is the part that itches. Through the circulation they make contact with the lung tissue and work their way through. Then, the wave motion of the cilia carry the larva up the trachea until they hit the epiglottis at the top of the windpipe. That "flip-flop" cover (epiglottis) is designed perfectly for the transmission of worms to the esophagus or the food pipe. They go right down the intestine until they hit the right environment for them. That environment is a small subsection of the small intestine.  They can't live anywhere else in the body. Celiac Food Allergy Cured Hookworms are the best option for regulating the immune system if you want to use helminths (worms) to do so. This is also called helminthic therapy. Hookworms can not reproduce in the human body. If you get twenty hookworms on your skin then you will only ever have twenty hookworms in your intestine. The Australian research showed that everyone has their own natural set point or set amount of hookworms that is right for their body. Each of the three researchers took 50 hookworms. After a few months, they examined themselves and found that they all had the amount of hookworms that they started with. So it seems that our bodies have a set point for worms just like they have a natural set point for the amount of bacteria. I turned to hookworms when all of my other tools did not work. That includes tools like homeopathy, herbs and nutrition, and also conventional medicines like prednisone, antibiotics, and antivirals. None of those tools worked for my son's autoimmune reaction to mono because they were not able to control his immune system. It required a live organism that wanted to control the inflammation to stop the autoimmune reaction. Now that he is three years on his worms, he has the added benefit of being freed from food allergies. Spending years having an autoimmune disease and then treating these diseases in thousands of people- I feel really grateful to have a found the miraculous medicine called hookworms. There is no doubt that natural medicines like homeopathy and herbs work, but my experience is that they work in cases whose immune system naturally wants to be brought back into balance and in a calm state. When you have autoimmune genes, like myself and my son, there is no natural or conventional medicine that will cure the case. Because the natural set point for our immune system is highly aggressive and nothing can change that. Restoring us to normal, just means we will continue to be inflammatory and reactive, for us that is out normal baseline. If you fix a furnace and make it run properly you still have a furnace.  I think the best metaphor is that of a nuclear reactor. The reactor melts down because there is no water to cool it down. There is nothing wrong with the reactor per se. The problem is not our immune system, we have the strongest immune systems. It is the absence of immune control.  It seems that hookworms are the infinite cooling system that those of us born with immune nuclear reactors need. Seeing patients for a few years now that have chosen to use hookworms to correct their health problems, continues to amaze me with their progress.  It seems as if hookworms take over the roll of general contractor.  If they do not like a bacteria in your system the get rid of it. If they want want build up another bacteria they will make you crave the foods that encourage its growth. They seem to have a strong ability to regulate the pituitary gland and change our hormone balance.  Hookworms have made even the most difficult cases fun to investigate again.  I do see times where experience being a doctor and using the natural and conventional medicines is key to making the hookworm treatment successful. Remember, we are trying to remodel a system that tends to want to go out of balance so obviously the more expertise-the better.  Support is key to make the hookworm transition successful.  Most importantly for me the hookworms are the first medicine I have encountered that is truly an anti-fragile therapy. So many of the other tools available to me as a naturopathic doctor are what I call fragile therapies. They are therapies that assume the patient is weak and will always stay weak. Because the patient is weak they need to eliminate foods that they are sensitive too, and need to avoid stress and aggravation and then they need a bunch of supplements. Many of these supplements are concentrated at hundreds to thousands of times higher than you would find in nature. Having done elimination diets and herbs and nutrients, and homeopathy with thousands of people I can say that although the calmer cases, very autoimmune cases do not get better with this approach. The patients have to live a somewhat rigid to very rigid lifestyle to make the natural approach work. Or they have to take dangerous drugs. Both of these are fragile medicines, hookworms are anti-fragile and I will try and explain why. The Only Alive medicine Other medicines are dead. Drugs are a dead medicine, and so are herbs, vitamins, and homeopathics. The all can be supportive, but really at their best they are just a guess at what the body needs. And they require a lot of micro management. This is because they can not respond the the environment or change according to the body’s needs. When you give vitamin C it will always be vitamin C and not vitamin A. Hookworms are alive. They have wants, needs, and desires. Not human versions of these characteristics but hookworm wants, needs, and desires. Do Tylenol, Remicaid, Metformin, Asacol, or Embryl want you to be healthy? Does chemotherapy care if your cancer gets cured? Does an herbal medicine change its action if you don’t get better? Does vitamin C care if you are happy? No to all. You know who does care about these things? Your hookworms. They care about these things because they depend on you for their own lives.  Nature has taught them how to take care of you. This is a symbiotic organism. Hookworms are only successful if we are successful, they are only happy if we are happy. Every mammal has a hookworm population, every primate has a hookworm population and every human being up to a few generations ago had hookworms. Human being without hookworms are the experiment. And the experiment of eliminating hookworms from humans has been a disaster. Especially in the people that have the highest concentration of Viking DNA. The biggest predictor of both autoimmune disease and cancer is having the highly aggressive Viking immune DNA without having the immunoregulation provided by hookworms. Hookworms want to pull your body into balance, not because they care about you. Hookworms that took care of their hosts in the past were the ones most likely to be passed on to the next generation. They are alive, they grow to about half and inch long and the width of a human hair, and they will adapt and change to control your inflammation. When they learn that gluten makes you inflammatory they will change the bacteria in your intestine and release a little bit of anti-inflammatory hormone when you eat gluten. You become anti-fragile to gluten. If you are stressed they release anti-stress hormones, you become anti-fragile to stress. You train them like you were bringing them to the gym. In the Australian hookworm study they slowly increased the amount of gluten that they were giving to celiac disease patients and the hookworms learned how to control that reaction. It is interesting to consider that in order to eat grains at least some nordic people require hookworms. The most successful immune system in human history was from a small tribe of Vikings. We sometime think of ourselves as German, Irish, English, etc., and this is true in the hundreds of years time frame. However, if we look at a time frame of thousands of years ago, all of the native populations of these areas were wiped out completely by the Vikings that came down and wiped out the people living in the german region at that time and then moved west and took out Western Europe, England, and Ireland. In the United States, we are the product of these people that crossed the ocean and came to America. Your autoimmune disease is the remnant of Viking DNA that allowed these people be the most successful DNA spreading in history, you just forgot your worms! If your going to have a powerful engine you need to have powerful brakes. The only brakes that I have found for the run away autoimmunity that we have is hookworms. Maybe in my years of practice and thousands of patients, I missed the magic homeopathic medicine, herb or nutrient that would have solved cases of severe autoimmune disease, but I don’t think medicine, any medicine, would have ever cured the problem. If a gorilla can not fit into a business suit that is not a gorilla problem. If our human bodies need hookworms and don't have them that is not a pathology, that is an imbalance. And this is what hookworms helped me realize: the problem is there is no problem. Autoimmune disease is like saying the immune system is too strong. Can that really be a problem? This is like saying that a car is too fast. Would you really fix a car engine if someone came to you and said, “My car’s engine is really powerful and fast and if I put the pedal down it goes past the other cars.”? Well isn’t that the same thing we are saying about highly inflammatory autoimmune patients? Your immune system is too good, too successful, too inflammatory? How can this be anything but nonsense? A powerful engine is never a problem and neither is a powerful immune system. Now if this car has no brakes do you then say it's a problem of the engine? Of course not. So if we have removed the brakes from the car with the most powerful engine ever can you really be surprised we have problems? So doctors are running around giving drugs to ruin the engine, or giving counseling the the driver to go slower, and telling people how to avoid all roads with curves so that their fast car does not crash. This is why all of us inflammatory people that end up living such compromised lives. I myself was gluten, egg, dairy, nightshade, salicylate, fructose, citrus, yeast and shellfish free for almost ten years. Yes it did help control my symptoms, but driving only on straight road with no curves. It was also incredibly boring and at some level depressing and defeating. I remember I used to go to the gym one day and then my body with would be super stiff for the next three days. I love workout and this made it miserable. Plus, if I did pull a muscle or a tendon then it would take me months to heal. Now, since I have had my worms for three years, I work out twice a day at least six days a week. Most exciting though is if I do go a little too hard and pull a muscle or tendon then all that I need is a good night’s sleep and it is better in the morning. When you have this highly aggressive auto-immune genetic system nothing will correct the imbalance because there is no imbalance. A perfectly tuned Viking immunes system is not calm and in the green zone. It is active and in the yellow zone getting ready to go into the red zone. So we can’t treat the patient that is naturally in the green zone like a patient that is naturally in the yellow zone. Let’s say I have a guy come in with three years of colitis since antibiotics. I ask him about the family history, does mom have an inflammatory disease? Dad? Brothers? Sisters? No, no, and no? Then, this is an easy green zone case. If we use some natural medicines on this easy patient like homeopathy, some probiotics, some herbs, there will be no problem to get a cure. He will come back in two weeks with a normal poo. Compare that to me and my family, both my mom and dad had stomach issues and all of my siblings have been diagnosed with autoimmune disease. Then I had colitis. I am a yellow zone case that went into the red. If we have another plague my system will be the one that survives, however, short of that it made me miserable. My family history shows that my DNA has my immune system programed for battle. The only thing that will get me into the green, no inflammation zone is the counter balancing anti-inflammatory action of hookworms. Hookworms never sleep, they are constantly looking for issues that would interfere with their successful egg productions. That issue is inflammation. Their eggs are tiny microscopic and not transmittable to another person without a life cycle in the soil. Worm Settlement Day 1-3 worms pass through the skin and enter the blood. This process will include itching and redness. way Day 3-5 circulation worms pass through the blood and stick to the lung tissue. Then they squeeze their way through to the inside of lungs. The wave like action of the cilia or hairs of the lung bring the worms up to the top of the trachea or wind pipe. Once they get up to the top of the wind pipe they are transferred from the wind pipe to the esophagus by the epiglottis or little lid at the top of the pipes. Interestingly the epiglottis is perfectly designed to transfer the worms. From week 2-3 and the hookworms settle in one small six inch section of the small intestine. This is where they can live for fifteen years or longer. During the time and for the weeks that follow the body will be adapting constantly to the presence of worms. Remember that your body should have had worms at six months old so there is an adaptation phase. Sometimes this phase peaks at week six. There may be other times where symptoms wax and wane. You may get a weird symptom here and there. Maybe a left ear pain and then maybe a right toe pain. Sometimes old symptoms return to go away and be resolved. Figuring out the relationship between you and the worms is where the art of practice comes in.....s Pregnancy and Hookworms One of the places we see that hookworms can teach the body immune system tolerance is with pregnancy. Women that have hookworms are have much less allergic children. For those of use that have auto-immune disease in our family we know that a less allergic kid is a less autoimmune child. If you know anything about having a child with autoimmune disease the importance of this can not be emphasized enough. It is an understatement to say that this situation is torture for the child and the parents. Hookworms are the only therapy shown to decrease allergies and therefore autoimmune disease in the next generation. Sometimes the mother's autoimmune disease starts at pregnancy. This is due to an effect called chimerism where the mother adapts some of the child's DNA and then starts getting immune to that DNA and creating autoimmune disease in herself. There is no problem taking hookworms or having hookworms while breastfeeding that I have seen. In fact there is every reason to suspect that the baby receives much less stress hormones when the mother has a proper population of hookworms in her system in addition to a much better balance of hormones including growth hormone. Lyme Disease and Hookworms A similar autoimmune reaction happens with the lyme disease bacteria. The problem is not the bacteria itself. The lyme bacteria has been around for a long time. When they defrosted the iceman they found from five thousand years ago them found that he had lyme disease. If he had lyme disease it is quite possible that his entire clan or all people had lyme at that time. Also a few years ago the found a tick that had been preserved in amber from fifty million years ago. This tick from millions of years ago also had lyme disease. Lyme disease is not new, even the dinosaurs had it. What is new is human beings without hookworms. This is the new experiment. And what have we seen from this experiment? We have seen a tremendous increase in autoimmune disease and cancer in anglo people over the last few generations. Lyme bacteria can not be killed when it is in the body. They did a study a few years ago and found that when monkeys have lyme disease no matter how long the put them on antibiotics and what kind of antibiotic they have when they examine the monkey's organs in detail they still find lyme disease. But that is ok because it is not the lyme bacteria that is the problem, it is the body's over-reaction the that bacteria. If we leave it alone it does not cause a problem. It is because of our chronic inflammatory fight that generate the destructive changes that cause disease. It is what we do to ourselves that causes the problems. Mono Virus and Chronic Fatigue It is the same story in the case of chronic fatigue, mono, and chronic epstein-barr syndrome. The mono virus is a herpes virus that lives normally in the vagus nerve that travels throughout our body. This is the nerve that makes us feel sick when we have the flu. The mono virus is a herpes virus that has its normal home in the vagus nerve and has for ages. What is new is to have an immune system that is constantly attacking the mono virus and therefore keeping the vagus nerve in an inflammatory state. I have always found it interesting to note that in order for the mono virus to reproduce it requires the immune system to attack it. Without the immune system reaction it can not reproduce. Basically people with chronic fatigue and chronic epstein-barr have had a case of the flu for years or decades. Hookworms with their immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory power have the ability to restore the immune tolerance that we should have to the mono virus. Transplant Rejection Hookworms have been studies with preventing rejection of transplants. Mice were given skin grafts with and without the normal mouse hookworm. When the mice had active hookworm infections they were much less likely to reject the skin grafts. This has tremendous implications for anyone that might be having inflammation as a result of any kind of foreign substance in their body. This includes breast implants, titanium rods and pins, dental implants, hernia grafts and other surgical or cosmetic substance. Obviously hookworms should also be used with an actual human organ transplant. Given the devastating results of rejecting an organ everything should be done to create a tolerant and accepting immune system. Since my hookworms my body has become anti-fragile, after three years I can eat whatever I want, and man, do I love it. I have set all of my weight lifting personal bests including from when I was eighteen years old. I have complete trust in my body again. I understand it was the whole autoimmune nonsense that kept my mind locked up for years. Not only does my body work again but my brain functions at a higher level then ever before. My strength of concentration is far beyond anything I could have imagined. Erections and Sex Drive The background level of stress that I constantly felt from inflammation is completely gone. And not for nothing as we say :) but my libido is better than ever also. At 56 years old it is stronger than it was decades ago. The largest gorilla in the tribe will have the most hookworms and highest testosterone. It seems that the hookworms allow and encourage higher testosterone levels. Probably just another hookworm success strategy. I have seen the same response in both male and female patients. It has gotten to the point in practice where I hesitate to recommend hormones if the patient does not have hookworms. I see that the hormones work better and in a lower dose when there is a good hookworm population in the gut. Sometimes women that have been on hormonal therapy actually go off the hormones when the hookworms get established because they don't need them. The affect to in men is that they seem to be able to tolerate more of their own natural testosterone and bioidentical testosterone supplementation without side effects. They conducted a study where they killed off the hookworms of pregnant moms and they found out the kids came out much more inflammatory and therefore prone to auto-immune disease. There is no way I would have another baby without the mom having hookworms. To be pregnant without worms if you have yellow zone DNA is just asking for problems. Then in nature children would normally have their own hookworm population by six months and I will absolutely make sure that my next children have hookworms. It does not matter when hookworms are given to the moms. Hookworms were constantly being acquired in pregnancy in human past. Drug Side Effects One of the reasons for my chronic anxiety was a reaction to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin that I took during my years in naturopathic medical school. One of the reactions to this antibiotics is a syndrome that is called "being floxed". Like most drugs cipro is fine for most people and completely toxic if you have the wrong genes. I had the wrong genes for this drug. I never remember feeling anxiety for a single day in my life before my reaction. After a few doses of the cipro, which by the way felt terrific when I was on it, and I had severe anxiety. I had some version of this anxiety until my first dose of hookworms at which point the low level of anxiety in my nervous system stopped. I do not know about other chronic drug reactions. But given my experience it may be worth a try. Hookworm Deficiency Syndrome This may seem extreme, but you have to remember that I have spent twenty years sitting in front of autoimmune patients and I know that in many of those cases life is almost not worth living for them. Human-beings without hookworms are the experiment, and my autoimmune patients my family and I have no interest in continuing the experiment. I am going to a “doctor” in my stomach, whose only interest is to keep my inflammation down. Ten worms drink three drops of blood for energy each day; they can have it. I like to give twenty. Most importantly is to know which worm you are getting. The Wolf Worm and the Dog Worm Microscopically worms are indistinguishable, and there are two worms that look at lot alike, we call them the wolf worm and the dog worm. When you see extreme reactions pictures online that is because someone got the wolf worm. Wolfs are not domesticated and neither are wolf worms. You want the dog worm and even within the dog family there are pitbull worms and poodle worms, you want the poodles worms. You want the most domesticated and friendly worms, and that is where a lot of time, energy, and attention goes into the process. If you don’t know the DNA lineage of your worm then you don’t know what you have. Unfortunately, we get a lot of calls from people in that situation. Hookworms and Anxiety Beyond everything that using therapeutic hookworms has done for my physical health, it is the profound sense of wellbeing that has impacted me and my life the most. Prior to worms and in spite of any conventional medicines or natural medicines I had done, I still found that most of the time I was in restlessness or unease.  This uneasiness affected all parts of my life at a low level.  It was not major enough to even complain about, but it was constantly there.  It was not until my hookworms that calmness became the strongest voice in my head.  Since my first hookworm dose, my brain and body calmed down.  This has only gotten better during the three years I have had my hookworm friends living with me. When Eating Your Food Allergens is Good Another fantastic aspect of the anti-fragile nature of hookworm therapy is the ability to consume food allergens that previously needed to be avoided.  As some of you will know we have a very advance and successful allergy testing in our practice.  Over ten years, we have many thousands of hidden food allergy panels, and the panels have been very successful in resolving symptoms in patients.  The only problem is that when you know your food allergens you have to avoid them.  This was the best option we had at one point in practice.  But eliminating foods was never the ideal solution for eliminating allergy symptoms. There were always things that I did not like about the food allergen removal.  To avoid food allergens created a stress and a state of “disease” itself.  Interestingly, native people with worm infections have much higher antibodies to the environment.  That means they have a higher IgE, IgA and IgG antibodies.  And they have less allergic symptoms, no autoimmunity, and no cancer.  This is because hookworms are able to provide biochemical gatekeeper actions and provide control on the reactivity to the allergens.  Now we have a bigger army but a more powerful general who is in charge.  The number of soldiers equals the number of antibodies that we may make to a food.  Before worms the only way we could control the allergic reaction was to control the number of soldiers.  By using hookworms, we put a new general in charge of when to declare war on a food. Hookworms have been well trained on how to determine which proteins to react to and they are experts in making that decision.  That fine line between reaction and lack of reaction is the difference between tolerating foods and creating a chronic and inflammatory reaction to foods. Is autoimmune disease a myth? One thing to remember if you are treating autoimmune disease in yourself or your family is that one of the more interesting theories of autoimmune disease is that there is not such thing as autoimmune disease. The basic idea with this theory is that the body has no way of really telling self from non-self. And of course the consequences of making a mistake between of allowing a deadly bug to be misidentified as part of your own body would be devastating. A different and more logical approach for the body in defending itself is to look for inflammation. When the body sees inflammation it then makes antibodies designated attack agents for every protein in that is in the inflammation war zone. The idea of this approach was that eventually you would kill whatever bacteria was a problem and the inflammation would stop. Yes you would damage your own body also but that could be fixed once the threat was over. But what if your body gets triggered for inflammation too easily, then you are constantly at war and constantly fighting your own body, this is autoimmune disease. The way that I think about consuming your food allergens after you have worms is the same way that I think about lifting weights. You don't squat 500 pounds the first day. So the first three months that you have hookworms is like learning to walk. After that time we can start doing exercises to make the worms more responsive and stronger. The way you train your hookworms is to start exposing your body to the allergens very gently. This is like adding a little weight each day and getting stronger and stronger. The hookworms will get better at sensing inflammation and responding to it with their anti-inflammatory signals. Hookworm application The worms are applied to the skin because that is the way that that they get acquired in nature.  In ancient cultures the children would get worms as soon as their feet would get on the ground.  It would be when the mother was working with the crops fertilized by night soil (human poo).  Fertilizing soil makes a tremendous difference for the yield of grains. We are taking about several times increase in yield of crops. Just the recorded history of grains is twenty thousand years. And that is the recorded history of farming. The unrecorded history may go back much farther. But in any case tens of thousands of years is a long time to adapt to these new foods and farming methods. If that does not seem like a long time just remember that all of the differences that we see in dog breeds are based on ten thousand years of selective breeding. All of the difference between a great dane and chihuahua are only due to ten thousand years of selecting for traits. In tens of thousands of years over these millennia your body became adapted to a high hookworm populations which provided the anti-inflammatory digestive tract support that allowed for the digestion of grains. The hookworms also got selected for their best traits to support humans. They required a part of their life cycle in this soil to properly grow and they were constantly reintroduced by the fertilization process.  So for thousands of years the reintroduction cycle of the hookworm was continued. With people benefitting from hookworms and hookworms benefitting from people. Mammals Have Hookworms Sometimes people wonder if we are doing an experiment by using hookworms. What I try to explain to them that the experiment is in killing off the hookworm population in humans. Every mammal has a hookworm population. Every primate has a hookworm population. Every human being had a hookworm population until a few generations ago. During this time nature selected the most healing hookworms since a healthy human host assured more eggs and more hookworms.  This is one of the reasons that it is essential that the hookworms being used by a person is identified by a DNA analysis.  It is impossible to tell hookworms apart microscopically.  Getting the wrong hookworm is like getting getting a wolf cub instead of a puppy.  Wolf cubs and the puppies of dogs may look a lot alike when they are young, but their behavior is much different as they get older. One become more aggressive and one becomes more domesticated.  At some point a wolf is just going to turn around and bite you.  So when you hear any reports about the lack of progress with hookworms your first question should be, which worm was used? The same thought should occur to you if you are exposed to planted news stories or internet stories and pictures.  Even within the right hookworms species (necator americanus) there are breeds just like there are breeds of dogs.  It is so important for the best effects to know if a person is getting the right breed of hookworm.  Just like if you were shopping for a puppy to bring home you would put a lot of thought into what kind of dog you were going to get.  There is a lot of difference in temperament behavior between a pitbull and a poodle.  It is very important when we are treating inflammatory conditions to make sure that we are only using the poodle breed of hookworm.  These are two essential variables that seeing so many people use hookworms for autoimmune disease teaches us. Sometimes I will get patients in a constant state of inflammation from another organism in their body that would be treated by the addition of hookworms. The anti-inflammatory effect of hookworms can treat chronic infections of other bacteria, viruses and harmful parasites. What happens when you do it? The worms are microscopic when they are applied.  You can’t see anything in the small vial the worms come in. There is some water and a small pipet to apple the worms to a small bandaid.  When the hookworms are on the skin they build a small keratin tube to work their way into the skin.  This creates a little itching, but this should not be suppressed because this itching and the scratching that accompanies it is part of the immune system resetting.  I encourage light scratching.  If it every gets uncomfortable then we have some tricks to calm that down without  decreasing the effectiveness of the the therapy. Once the worms enter the body they are moved by the blood through the circulation until they touch the lung.  Once on the lung, they stick and are moved by the sucking pressure of the lungs on the other side.  Once they are inside they are moved up the lung by the little hairs on the inside of the lung.  Once at the top of the windpipe they hit the little flip-flop at the top of the lung and the food pipe.  It is so interesting to see that the flip-flop epiglottis is basically perfectly designed to transfer the hookworms from the wind pipe to the food pipe and down into the stomach. The worms travel to through the stomach, survive the stomach acid, and go into the small intestine.  They are able to live in one small six inch section of the small intestine.  The part is called the duodenojejunal junction flexure.  They stick there and they wait for the right time to start feeding, and by feeding, I mean sucking your blood.  And they drink so much blood… gallons and gallons per day… Actually our twenty little hookworms take two drops of blood per day.  And then they get to work reorganizing your microflora.  In other words they change your bacteria in your gut into something that makes them more comfortable. The Hookworm High One very interesting part of the hookworm experience is the hookworm high. This is an amazing experience that I wish everyone could have. I remember when I first put the worms on my skin all of my stress dissolved like a fog lifting from around me. I was still aware of the various challenges in my life. But I could not generate a stress response to those issues. This was the first time I could recall since being a child that I felt no stress. This decrease in stress was a sign that inflammatory chemicals had decreased in my body and in my brain. Along with this decrease in stress was an amazing spike in my energy. I went to clean my back room that had not been organized in years. I did the entire reorganization process in one night. It was amazingly easy to decided what needed to go and what needed to stay. I got rid of eight large garbage bags of supplies and supplements that I no longer wanted. I cut the amount of shelving space in half and got rid of the shelves I didn't need. I made my storage room manageable, sane, and pleasant. I had been needing to do this for ten years! Then I decided it was time to change the color of my office...I never paint I have never had the extra energy. But I painted and then I realized I needed a new desk. And it went like that from that point forward. All of the things that I wanted to do but never had the extra energy now seemed very doable. This has continued at various levels since I took my first dose of hookworms. Everyone gets some version of the hookworm high. I would like everyone to have the profound effect that I had but that is not the effect that everyone needs. Everyone gets the right effect for them and for what the hookworm wants to do to start balancing the body out. Worms want low inflammation They are most comfortable when your inflammation is low.  So when you have hookworms inside of you, you have little helpers that work hard to monitor your system for inflammation and to release chemicals to decrease that inflammation. Some people think just of the digestive track when they think of worms but the symptoms can be anywhere in the body.  I have seen many people with chronic joint and muscle problems have their condition cured with hookworms. I don’t know if hookworms will cure everything that I want them to cure yet.  What I do have fairly established in my mind is that they are definitely not to be cured without hookworms.  My family is obviously in the category that will never be cured without hookworms.  All of my siblings have autoimmune disease.  And even with all of my natural medicine tools it was a constant effort to keep the pigs in the pen and keep the symptoms from returning.  Since they have all been hookwormed, I don’t hear the occasional complaints that I used to hear.  Hookworms make other medicines work Also I have noticed in myself, my family and patients that the medicines that didn’t work in the past now work in cases.  I used to use homeopathic medicine for myself and it would not work in the way that is worked with other people.  There is no point in trying to tune a car that only has three tires. So much of naturopathic medicine, homeopathy and herbs is fine tuning medicine that for people with Viking immune systems is like fiddling while Rome burns.  This was most certainly a lot of the times that I spent trying to cure my own symptoms with natural medicine. I still find my old natural medicine tools valuable. But given the severity of symptoms and conditions I see that these medicines are most valuable working with the worms. In fact I find out for myself that now the natural medicines I take actually work better. Before it was disappointing that homeopathy or herbs would not work with me. The way I describe it to patients is that doing some of these natural medicine approaches with the highly autoimmune and inflammatory patients I see is like washing the windows on a car that has three tires. It is the same thing with trying to change autoimmune disease through diet. Make doctors great again The great thing about being a doctor is making sick people well. There is nothing like the depth of appreciation of a grateful mom, dad, husband, wife or other loved one. People know where their lives have been changed for the better, or their child is not waking in pain. That is the beautiful part. The frustrating, disappointing and infuriating part is when all the knowledge, time and effort that you have placed into becoming a good doctor does not help your patient. This is where hookworms and the understanding of the role they play biologically have been a godsend for practice. Again the important thing to remember is that some people in their perfectly balanced state are going to be inflammatory. These patients will not be helped by medicines that get them more balanced. Indeed these patients are often aggravated by medicines that seem to help everyone else. Trying to make an autoimmune Viking more balanced is like trying to make the ocean less wet. Once the scale is counter balanced the natural medicines that worked on everyone else begin to work on the Viking patients. Now these bad patients that have a bad reaction to everything now begin to respond like one of your good patients. Living in the bubble You have to micromanage the diet or your car goes out of control with every challenging corner. So we can try different strategies to perfectly manage this car with three tires, or we can put the fourth tire on. Hookworms are the fourth tire on the car for people that are chronically inflammatory and autoimmune. One of my patients described this as living in the bubble. She was a beautiful lady that had come to me after being treated for a cancerous lump in her breast. She received testing for hidden food allergens and of course several of the foods were off the chart with high reactions. I have never seen a cancer patient that did not have a hidden food allergen, that is one of the reasons we get cancer after all. In any case she had become so concerned about her exposure that it had really limited her chance to enjoy parts of her life. After being on her hookworms for a bit she was finally able after several years to be more flexible with her diet. She was amazed at the freedom she started feeling. I always knew that I did not want to restrict people's lives in any way, being healthy should be about increased freedom, not increased restriction. And yet eating your food allergens if you have had cancer is not a good idea either, cancer definitely does not lead to more freedom. The hookworms change all that because they create that barrier that requires something more than the antibody and protein link to get to the inflammation stage. Hookworms and Cancer I now recommend that all of the people with cancer that I see go on hookworms also. We don't know much about cancer in medicine, in spite of a lot time and money invested. One thing we do know about cancer and the immune system however. White blood cells are our body's defense system. Our body makes a white blood cell called eosinophils. We also know that the chance of getting cancer or of cancer returning decreases the more eosinophils you have. Again, more eosinophils equals less cancer. Guess what hookworms do? Hookworms raise the eosinophil levels. Hookworms raise the white blood cell that protects you from cancer. Many of the cases I now get to see seems to resolve like layers of a cake.  We might see an emotion like anxiety or depression first improve, and then an old injury, and then we see autoimmune symptoms start resolving, and then we can see an environment in food allergens.  I know for myself at some point to manage my inflammation I needed to avoid the following foods, gluten, egg, dairy, nightshades, salicylates, fructose, and an ever increasing sensitivity to nuts that left me eating the very lame, disappointing, depressing and defeating.  This morning after three years on worms I had breakfast of egg cheese omelet with toast buttered with jelly.  Then orange juice and coffee with delicious milk.  This combination of food is actually known as food.  I like food.  I don’t like not food.  There is no reason to be reactive to to any food, how can that be a normal function?  Why would we be reactive to anything in the environment, including pollen, bacteria, and molds? The healthy immune system is tolerant of all but the most extreme attacks on our system.  Any attack on a protein we should be tolerating distracts our immune system from the job that is should be doing to watch our system for real problems.  Hookworms teach our body to chill out and stop attacking random proteins and ourself. I am so happy to have energy again and to be able to do the things that I want to do.  Most days I work out hard twice per day.  And it is rare that I miss a day but even more importantly for me it is rare that I want to miss a day.  I have not felt this good working out since I was fifteen years old, and what is great for me especially is that the ability to have a muscle pump that was missing for decades when I was inflammatory.  Hookworms help hormone balance Studies have shown that the biggest gorilla in the troop has both the most worms and the highest levels of testosterone.  It seems as if the presence of hookworms has an effect on the endocrine and hormonal systems of the body such that is allows a higher level of testosterone in the system.  We don’t know why the worms do this we can only guess that having a higher level of worms and therefore a higher hormone level was an advantage at some point.  Most people that I have seen tell me that their sex drive has increase after worms… so I have to guess that everyone using the hookworms have hormone levels are going up or most everyone in any case.  I know that many people have told me their sex drive increased with hookworms and I have experienced that also. If you don’t have hookworms you may be surprised to know that the biggest concern that people express with their hookworms is not having them but the fear of killing them off.  I do not think that you need to be concerned about that.  Apparently us and gorillas share the same type of hookworm.  Their worms can live in us and our worms can live in them.  Gorillas eat bamboo shoots that produce cyanide in the gut, a deadly toxin for humans…and even that does not kill hookworms.  I have experimented on my family with many substances that are supposed to kill worms and none of it does.  This includes herbs like wormwood which you think would have an effect.  Even the erection medicine viagra which had its origin as a worm medicine does not kill worms.  The way that we know is that the one thing that hookworms do to the lab work is to increase the white blood cells called eosinophils.  This is the anti-cancer white blood cell which is another advantage of worms.  In any case I have experimented with all of the worm killers and my eosinophils stay nice and high.  If we do want to kill them off the worm drug abendazole works very quickly (we make good poisons) and the first capsule 99% of the worms are dead and the next capsule 99.99%, etc. More interestingly there are people that want to know what to do to support their hookworms.  To them I say: listen to your worms.  The worms are going to start making course corrections in your health, and the more you can pay attention to them and follow the directions the more directly progress with come.  As the system remodels to a healthier balance there can be some bumps along the way.  This is where I feel the experience of the thousands of cases I treated with general naturopathic natural medicine is most useful.  This is because if we successfully manage these small hurdles then the body is on an unstoppable path to health with this synergistic organism providing a constant and ever adjusting supply of anti-inflammatories. In practice when people ask me what they need to do in order to help the hookworms get rid of all their symptoms I just tell them that all they need to do is to keep treading water. They can keep treading water while the hookworm drains the ocean of symptoms that surround them. No matter how big the ocean just keep treading water and it will drain. Remember I was twenty years in practice before I got my head around using hookworms therapeutically. And it was only out of complete necessity that I had to start using them, all my natural tools and the conventional tools that I had been willing to use wouldn’t work. Additionally I had been subject to bad information in the alternative medicine field. Many thought that somehow worms caused disease. Obviously this was a misinformation smear campaign against my little friends since the highest rate of both cancer and autoimmune disease occur in first world countries with no worms. The highest rates of colon cancer is in Norway which is a country where Viking people do not have worms. The highest rate of all these diseases are in Viking, Anglo people that do not have the immunological shock absorber provided by hookworms, and its only hookworms in some people that can restore their immune system to the normal function that they may never have had before in their entire life. I have tremendous appreciation for hookworms and yes I ask myself why sometimes. The best answer that I have as to why hookworms work at such a profound level is that every other medicine is dead. Look at over the counter medicines like Tylenol and aspirin, they are dead. Homeopathic medicine is dead, energetic but with no living instincts, herbs are dead plants. Hookworms on the other hand, are alive! They want to live and survive and pass on their genes to their offspring. They can feel, perceive and change for their own survival. If they sense you reacting to something inflammatory they can release more anti-inflammatories or they can release less if you don't need it. They are the shock absorber that your body has been craving. An alive medicine is an amazing gift. It is the gift of anti-fragility. Worms are the anti-fragile medicine. This means when you take them you become stronger and better able to manage all kinds of challenges and stresses. This does not just include food stresses but mental, emotional and physical stresses of all types. Hookworm is the mother worm I call hookworm the mother worm. Hookworms determine our reactions to all other worms, bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms. Even if we were to use another worm like whip worms for colitis it is always best to start with hookworms. Hookworms can release chemicals signals that increase or decrease the inflammatory response to different microbes depending on the ebodies reaction to the them or how the hookworms want the body to react. Obey the worm The most important thing to know is the the number one rule of getting better on hookworms is to listen to the hookworms. We don't know exactly what signals they will give but everyone is different. It may be an increase in sleep. It may be a craving or aversion to a food. It may be a change in thirst. A desire or aversion to exercise. After the worms if someone gets a craving even for their food allergens then I am willing to consider letting them have it. This because at some point the cravings are being created by the worms. The worms are doing this to rearrange the bacteria in the intestines and they are asking for the food to encourage or inhibit the growth or one or more of the bacteria. I try and encourage people not to worry about accidentally killing their worms. Like any other field where the data is scarce and subjective a lot of misinformation can proliferate. Remember that we share the same hookworms as gorillas. Now gorillas can eat a handful of bamboo bark that would literally kill us. The bark releases cyanide as it breaks down. So since this toxin does not kill the hookworms in the gorilla a fairly safe general statement is that if the substance does not kill you it is not likely to kill your hookworms. Interestingly that often becomes the biggest fear even for those people that were most hesitant to start in the first place. People start feeling so good that they don't want to do anything to interfere with the process. Luckily hookworms can live for decades. Worm transition management Your mom should have had worms while you were in the womb. This would have taught your body tolerance to the environment. If this did not happen you should have had your hookworms very young, certainly by six months old. We know this didn't happen, so your body did not learn to tolerate the environment. So when the wrong bacteria, virus, job, teacher, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, injury, pregnancy, implant, transplant or other stressor came along, you developed an uncontrolled, unrelenting inflammatory response called autoimmune disease, cancer or some other name. Now your body had to be re-educated, this is not normal or natural. Having worms is natural but installing them at this age is probably not unless we have the advantage of giving them to a youngster in need. So there are some tools that help the transition. One major toll in the office is the homeopathic medicine called Boiron Histaminum Hydrochloricum 30C. This is a homeopathic medicine and if you have tried a lot of homeopathy for your condition and not been successful then you need to remember we are not treating the autoimmune disease with homeopathy. Homeopathy will never cure Viking autoimmunity. What we are treating is the transition to hookworm immune regulation. Because a lot of things have happened through the years that hookworms would have prevented, there is some house cleaning to be done. The thing to remember is that symptoms with hookworms are never bad, they are just clues as to what needs to be readjusted in the system. Some people just start getting better with no symptoms. Others will have some symptoms as the worms change the system. Some digestive upset is normal and can be anything from stomach cramps to nausea, diarrhea or constipation. These are all transitional phases that will pass. Another favorite worm transition medicine is simple Benadryl. One thing that can happen when the worms first eat from the blood stream is the the body attacks with high histamine levels. This is the same thing that happens when people get hay fever and such. Those people can feel not so great with their allergies and the same thing can happen with the worm transitions. The main problem is that the best antihistamines are the worms themselves. But they need time to get up and running in order to know how and when to control the histamine levels. Once they get their energy up they take over, and there is a new boss in town that does not like worms being attacked. Pretty quickly, certainly within a few days the hookworms figure it out. Another way to control some gastrointestinal inflammation in hookworm cases is to use Pepto-Bisomol. I don't know why this works and it doesn't really matter because we just use it for a few days if needed. We also don't hesitate to use hydrocortisone or even prednisone if needed. These are all used as they should only be used, for temporary short term symptom relief. Personally I didn't notice any symptoms. It does seem like some of the Lyme (Lymes) disease patients that get worms have some of the stronger reactions. But again that does make sense because their hyper reaction to the Lyme bacteria has already demonstrated that they are hyper reactors. I understand that hookworms are a new concept for some people, they were new to me once. I imagine that this is similar to the way probiotics or beneficial bacteria was viewed when it first began to catch on as a way to treat those people that had symptoms after using antibiotics. I imagine that people wonder about the bacteria getting out of control and other concerns not to dissimilar from the questions that come up for people when the first hear about hookworms. Your body controls the dosage No matter how many worms are given it is the body that controls the amount of worms that we have eventually. Studies have shown that each person has a set point for the amount of worms they have. When researchers added more worms to their subjects with worms the amount within a few months returned to the level that they had previously. The hookworm journey Hookworms are applied to a one by two inch bandage and placed in the top of the left foot. They travel through the circulation to the lungs, where they stick and work their way to the inside. Behind in the skin they leave little tubes that itch. With that itch the worms are already reprograming the immune system. The are distracting the immune system from attacking its own body. For some of is this is the first time every in our adult lives that we stop attacking ourselves. The cilia or hair of the lungs gently carries the hookworms up the the top of the trachea or wind pipe. From there the worms stick to the epiglottis or flip flop that protects our lungs when we eat food. The epiglottis carries the worms to the food pipe or esophagus. The worms travel down to where they live, which is one small six inch section in the small intestine that has the ideal environment for them. Worm journey day to day. The first day or two we expect an itchy rash. Days 3-5 then then the worms get to the lungs. The next two weeks the worm travel down the gastrointestinal tract. From weeks three to six the worms will send out a bunch of decoys to distract the immune system. there could be some symptoms at this point that are easily controlled. These symptoms settle down from week seven to twelve. From that point on we observe the body and the worms and see what is needed. In any case we expect continued progress. Care and feeling of your worms I really like that I get to look at the hookworm process with a natural medicine perspective. There are all kinds of amazing supportive therapies we can use to support the body as it readjust and remodels to the correct shape and function. The transition can and should be very smooth and comfortable. Two of my favorite tools to support the process are homeopathic histamine and ant powder. Ant powder is considered a Chinese herbal medicine, but it is really just powdered ants. It is called the king of herbs in Chinese medicine for its ability to restore health and vigor. Qualities of a good worm Hookworms were not randomly selected as the best worm for helminthic therapy. There are many qualities that we look for in a good hookworm. We want a worm that can't reproduce in the body, and that does not create annoying symptoms, and that can't be passed on to anyone else. And not to be forgotten among all of these concerns we want a worm that is going to help resolve our autoimmune disease. In my experience hookworms meet all of these standards. At least the worms that we have tested and know exactly what we are getting. Other worm approaches There are some people that promote hdc, hymenolepis diminuta cysticercoids or rat tapeworm, or angel worm. This is a reasonable approach as there is no doubt that human acquired other animal worms in our history. Having tried this I found that the worm designed for our body (hookworms) was less inflammatory and gave results at a more profound level. At some level I feel that rat tapeworms are best for rats. I like human hookworms for humans. I feel there is something more predictable in the response and the progress in the cases where symbiotic species are used rather than transient gut pathogens. I am glad that we have the options to choose however. Whipworms on the other hand can be very helpful. If we think of hookworms living in the small intestine, then whipworms are the normal resident of the large intestine. We always want the mother worm (hookworms) in place first. After that point the addition of whipworms can create an additional anti-inflammatory action in the body. Obviously this has the chance to have a most profound action on the colon. Whipworms Whipworms for Colon Disease Monkeys in captivity get colitis, a dose of 1000 whipworm eggs cured 4 of 5 cases of monkey colitis. This dose of worms ( trichuris trichiura ) substantially changed the diversity of bacteria in the colon. The protective mucus production increased and diminished the bacteria attached to the colon wall. When hookworms are added to whipworms then the anti-inflammatory effect is ten times. Hookworms live in the small intestines and control inflammation there. Whipworms live in the large intestine and control inflammation there. The two worms, working together, have a profound anti-inflammatory effect on the entire human organism. I went right into the marine corps out of high school. While there I was given a vaccination before a special deployment. I developed a peri-rectal fistula which is basically a hole between you rectum and your skin. They did a surgery on me that did not work and left me with a lot of pain. I was discharged and came home and things went from bad to worse. Within a year I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. My symptom included needing to go to the bathroom frequently, some time a few times per hour. Day and night. I still made it through college at stony brook. Things kept getting worse in spite of tons conventional drugs and all of the horrible side effects. Finally, no knowing any better, I went to the super-great gastroenterologist on park avenue. He had the leather bound books and the dark wood mahogany desk. After a brief exam he down across from me. He told me that he had a cure for me. I could not believe it. Then he told me the cure. He would eliminate my colitis by cutting out my colon and putting me on drugs for life. If I did not do this he thought I would be dead in six months. So I stood up and walked out. Probably going to my death according to the doctor. Instead I started naturopathic medical school. But by the time I was finished with vegetarian diet and other ineffective approaches I was worse after that four years of medical school than before starting. In addition to some ineffective natural approaches I ended up getting a reaction to an antibiotic that was prescribed to me called ciprofloxacin. The reaction is called getting "floxed" and it creates severe anxiety. I had never had anxiety before this drug, but I experimented because none of the natural medicines were working. In addition with my colitis attacks throughout school I would get severe hemorrhoid attacks with that. By the time I finished naturopathic medical school four years later I felt even worse. But then I began to practice and my patients began to teach me. It was tough, I was still exhausted from my own symptoms. After seeing patients often I would have to lance my own fistula to relieve the pressure because it would fill with blood. I would do this with a razor blade and go back and keep working with patients. But eventually me and the patients began to teach each other, my best medical education has been the thousands of people I have seen. They began to teach me how to get inflammation down. The allowed to me to have a long practice and raise my family while managing my symptoms. Even with all my exposure to alternative medicines it took me 20 years to meet the most profound healer I had ever met. His name is wormy the hookworm and he did not just help me manage my symptoms he gave me my life back. I had always dreamed of reclaiming a true state of health. But of course I wondered if I would even find my answer. So I just want to share a picture of me enjoying my life in a way that 10 years ago would have seemed completely unrealistic. Ten years ago my body would get extremely tight and painful If I did any kind of workout it would trigger some kind of pain in my body. It could be anywhere from the knee, to the shoulder, to severe neck pains. The neck pains would keep me up at night and many nights I couldn't sleep. But I loved working out. It was always one of my greatest pleasures. The day after the worms I woke up completely awake a 6am. It was just like a light switch went on. I went from asleep to awake with none of the usual grogginess. And I woke up with a strong urge to get to the gym. That was about three or four years ago and I go to the gym twice per day since then and I have only missed about ten days. I literally felt better from the moment the worms hit my skin. I made a note to myself that in spite of any obstacles I should use the hookworms. I followed my own instruction and what you just read summarizes that experience. :) I feel no pain in my workouts now and at 56 feel like I am doing the best workouts I have ever done. I have definitely set my maximum of lifting records the year. It is amazing to feel my body heal and recover so quickly. My brain and body are free of anxiety.
